Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas, better called Ashanti, was born on 13 October, 1980 at Glen Cove New York. Tina Douglas' mother was an instructor in dance and Ken-Kaide Douglas, who was the mother of the Ashanti Douglas, was a vocalist. She is more youthful than Kenashia T. Douglas. Douglas named her Ashanti to honor Ghana's Ashanti Empire, where women ruled and had influence. Douglas wanted Ashanti to adopt this same model.
